when my husband and i got married (back in the dark ages), we kept our names. the next january when we filed our income taxes, i got a rather condescending letter from the state office telling me that i'd written my own name wrong on our form (i.e., i wrote my own last name rather than his). when i wrote back to tell them that i hadn't changed my name, they asked me to prove it.

it was sort of bizarre, having to prove you didn't do something, but there you have it.

switching gears, karl is getting all kinds of positive interest in the early peeks at his star trek role. BEWARE OF SPOILERS AT THESE LINKS. i just can't wait to see this movie, and i don't care if anyone but bones and nemo are in it. perhaps there could be kissing, too. kissing would be fine, yes. ;)

Wow. That's pretty freaking... bizarre. o_O I mean, it's not like you're the first woman in the history of the universe to not take her husband's name. [wry smile] Whoever was going over your paperwork must've just had an unusually prickly hair lodged in his/her ass that morning. Good grief.

I've been married for 21 years and did not change my name. I've never been questioned on it, although my husband has endured years of grief about it. We hyphenated the kids so that they could be more like their Hispanic heritage and my daughter's not too crazy about her super long name and how confused the masses are by it. But the government has never questioned. We have had contracts for a house written up wrong and had to get them changed, though. 'two single people' *snorts*

I think a copy of your SS card should be enough. Although I'd hate to have to send that in the mail. Seems really odd to me. Maybe you could request that a supervisor phone you? *shakes head*

And, I cannot wait for that movie, so I'm not looking at the links!

oh, it happened 20 years ago, hon. it was just occurring to me today that it's an odd thing to feel you have to prove you did not do something, rather than that you did. y'know?

our kids just have his last name, though one of them has my last name as his middle.

*forgives you about links* ;)

Ah... got it. *nods* It's impossible to prove a negative, but not surprising that someone would have questioned you 20 years ago. It's much more common now, even here in backwoods central, but some folks STILL don't get it.

Nothing surprises me anymore. Ten days before my husband and I got married, he changed HIS name. You cannot believe the number of people who are totally flummoxed by a man changing his name. They're flat-out gobsmacked, I tell you.

you know, i do believe it (the numbers of the gob-smacked), completely. *boggles* i get that reaction about homeschooling, too. or the fact that our family are night owls somewhat, going to bed and sleeping in later than most others. it's just kind of funny, sometimes, what matters to people.

Friends of ours were just like you and your family: late-to-bed, late-to-rise homeschoolers. Most people don't get any of that, either.

The study of philosophy of science is all about the impossibility of proving a negative. So maybe, instead of sending them a paper proving what your name, you could have sent them Sir Karl Popper's work on philosophy of science instead! I would have loved to have seen their faces when they received some big fat virtually incomprehensible book in the mail!

I can't believe someone asked you to prove it. Unbelievable. And yes, proving you didn't do something is impossible. Which makes it such an effective tactic for crazy minded folks. *g*

Hmm. Just made a REALLY odd noise at the pictures of karl. I will NOT write KArl/Eric.

Or Eric/The kid playing kirk.

OH GOD THE WHEEL HAS COME FULL CIRCLE AND WE WILL ETURN TO STAR TREK PR0N.

I kinda wanna make my own version of that bugs icon, but with, like, Viggo reading AoP or something. WOULD YOU MIND?

*cuddles*

eric/kirk-kid? ok, stop squicking me.

FINE, no karl/eric. but i will happily take a part 2 of concessions as a consolation prize....

am SO annoyed with myself. i hit 'send' on that last reply to you and then thought, no, no, no, WHY did i send already!? go make her some and THEN send, dummy! so now you think these were cuz you asked, when really they is just cuz i wuvs you.

*sighs at tax man* Well done, though, for remaining independent!

I'm not reading anything about Star Trek because I truly don't want anything spoiled, but I'm thrilled that Karl's getting good press - thanks for sharing even though I haven't read it!!
