when my husband and i got married (back in the dark ages), we kept our names. the next january when we filed our income taxes, i got a rather condescending letter from the state office telling me that i'd written my own name wrong on our form (i.e., my own last name rather than his). when i wrote back to tell them that i hadn't changed my name, they asked me to prove it.
it was sort of bizarre, having to prove you didn't do something, but there you have it.
Nothing surprises me anymore. Ten days before my husband and I got married, he changed HIS name. You cannot believe the number of people who are totally flummoxed by a man changing his name. They're flat-out gobsmacked, I tell you.
